Great days out in the Haute Savoie

Explore, discover..

Thonon/Evian

Thonon and Evian are the closest larger towns in the area sitting at the bottom of the valley overlooking Lac Leman.  Both offer a wider variety of shops, cafes and restaurants.  Down by the marina in Thonon you will find a lovely walk along the front and some great restaurants for sitting outside in the shade of the plane trees.

Annecy

Annecy is approximately a 1 hour 20 minute drive away, it is a beautiful town sitting at the northern point of a large lake framed by mountains.  It is well worth the journey with plenty to see and do.   You can take a cruise accross the lake (one of the cleanest in the world), there are several boat/cruise companies based along the lake front offering a variety of trips from 35 minutes to 2 hours.  The old town is dominated by the Palais de l'ile buit in 1132 in the middle of the Thiou canal, either side of the canal are plenty of restaurants to choose from to enjoy a relaxing lunch.  Amongst the warren of lanes you will find some fabulous shops, from antiquities and art to the typical tourist ? as well as the usual clothes and home furnishing shops.  For the more active there is a great cycle path that runs around the lake and is a great way to explore the other pretty villages around the lake - you can hire bikes locally for a reasonable price.

Yvoire

Yvoire is on of France's most beautiful villages, it is a medeival village situated on the southern shore of Lac Leman.  It is a walled fishing port which dates back to the 14th Century.  It now has a handful of restaurants, novelty shops and a 'garden of senses' in the centre.

Chamonix

Chamonix, a mecca for mountaineering and climbing is about 75 minutes from Morzine.  It is a pretty year round resort with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.  Set in the foothills of Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Europe towers over the valley at 4,810 metres.  An absolute must is to take the cable cars from the valley floor up to the Aguille du Midi at a breathtaking 3,842 metres for a panoramic view of Mont Blanc and the rest of the Alps.  Not suitable for those who don't like heights, who may prefer the Montenvers train, a funicular railway which takes you up to the Mer du Glace for a close up view of the this fantastic galcier.
